Bear Run Nature Reserve

Adjoining Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Ohiopyle State Park, Bear Run Nature Reserve's 4500+ acres has over 20 miles of marked trails. It lies along the west slope of Laurel Ridge, facing the spectacular Youghiogheny River gorge. As you traverse the Reserve's trails, you will experience an area of great natural diversity - from the beauty and solitude of dense oak and hemlock forest - to the sparkling-clear waters of Bear Run and Laurel Run - to a spectacular Youghiogheny River gorge overlook.

A trip to Bear Run Nature Reserve is a rich outdoor experience in any season of the year. You may use the trails for hiking, nature study, photography, backpack camping, ski touring-or just to he alone for awhile. For nature buffs, Bear Run Nature Rreserve offers an ideal setting.

This natural area is owned and protected by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. WPC hopes you will enjoy your visit to Bear Run Nature Reserve and asks that you help protect its natural beauty by leaving everything just as you find it.

Directions from the Inne at Watson's Choice

Located on Route 381 3 1/2 miles north of Ohiopyle

  • Turn Left [East] on Route 21 East
  • Travel 3.1 mi to traffic light at Route 119
  • Turn Right and stay to right following on-ramp sign to [US 119 South Morgantown/ US 40 East ]
  • This is the Uniontown By-Pass. Follow signs for US 40 East
  • Travel 8.3 miles to the top of Summit Mountain
  • After about 5.5 miles you'll start to climb the mountain (2.5 miles up from this is Point Lookout, a worthwhile quick stop).
  • At the top of the mountain to the right is the Summit Hotel

  • Continue straight on US 40 East
  • Travel 2.2 miles to Intersection of Chalk Hill - Deer Lake Road
  • Look for the Post Office on the left in anticipation of a left turn to follow.
  • Turn Left on Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road
  • Travel 6.5 miles to intersection.
  • At 6.0 miles you will pass the entrance to Kentuck Knob.
  • Turn Right (to Ohiopyle on 2019)
  • Travel 1.4 miles to intersection of Route 381
  • Caution: this section contains a very steep grade with sharp curves. A lower gear is advised.
  • At the bottom of the hill just after a hairpin turn and the new bridge is a parking area for access to Cucumber Falls - absolutely beautiful and worth a short stop.
  • Turn Left on Route 381 at Ohiopyle
  • You'll pass through the village of Ohiopyle. A stop at the lookout over the waterfalls is very worthwhile.
  • Travel 4.5 miles to Bear Run Nature Reserve, 0.5 mile past entrance to Fallingwater
